The People of the Land
The Exchange will take place in communities that are
geographically different; the high arid lands of the Hopi
reservation, the forested mountains of northern California
and the lush islands of Hawai‘i. The youth
will come from a range of different areas, from heavily
populated places such as the cities of O‘ahu to the
rural villages of the Hopi. While the landscapes may differ,
the native people who come from them have many similarities.
Each of these cultures comes from ancient, indigenous
cultures that were based in symbiotic relationship with
their environment. Each culture had acute systems of knowledge
of place which allowed them to exist in sustainability
with the land and with each other. We know that this wisdom
is still pertinent and is not only vital to our youth,
but vital to future global survival. The Native Youth Cultural
Exchange is designed to expose the youth to their traditional
ways to build new visions of vibrant native communities.
